Community Leadership and Service: What Students Learn
Course Objectives
How This Class Is Different
In this semester-long course, students will explore, apply, debate, and
discuss:

  • The impacts of volunteerism on a community and society.
  • Different forms of volunteerism and community organizations
and how each operate to benefit community.
  • Where to find valuable volunteer, charitable, and community
leadership resources in our local area and beyond.
  • Viable careers in public service, leadership, and charity.
  • Practical problem solving strategies related to solving
    community and societal issues.
  • Social issues relevant to themselves, their communities, and the
world: What these problems are, how they affect people, and
    approaches to solving them.
  • How charitable organizations and efforts are created and how
    they operate.
  • Their person development of improved leadership skills and
sense of empowerment related to community and charitable
    efforts.
Community Leadership and Service is not your typical High School
Elective. Unique characteristics of this course benefit students:

  • Students will have the opportunity to meet and learn from real
community and charitable leaders, helping them apply their
course learnings to relevant, real-world efforts.
  • The service-learning component of this course means students
will get to apply their learnings to creating and completing
projects that benefit the community right then and there - their
ability to make an impact will be literal and visible throughout
    the course.
  • Students will be able to build upon any existing volunteer or
leadership experiences, taking them to the next level, and
learning about options for further involvement in helping the
community: from public leadership positions, to philanthropic
    careers.
  • ME³ will offer a $500 scholarship to an exemplary student in
this course; only students taking this course are eligible.
